On the Brewers and Faith

Written Wednesday, October 28, 11am, morning after Brewers loss to the Rays in the 12th inning.

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for,
the conviction of things not seen.  Hebrews 11:1

When Cooper Pratt hit that homer in the top of the 12th last night, I was sure the Brewers would win.

But then Joey Ortiz, who entered the game because of his defensive skills, made an error on a soft grounder, allowing Junior Caminero to reach first.

You know the rest.

Like you, I have faith the Brewers will win one of the remaining three, likely tonight, because the Rays pitching was spent for what I hope will be their only win.

The Brewers have a system in place, have developed a mindset through the season, that can’t be shaken by one loss.  They play together, don’t get rattled, keep cool heads.

Even when they are down, they are never out. One loss is a setback, but that was yesterday, and today is today.

There is some sort of spiritual lesson in this, though it is a strain to make it.

The 11th Chapter of Hebrews famously lists our ancestors of faith:

.  … By faith Abel offered to God a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain’s…By faith Noah.. built an ark to save his household…By faith Abraham obeyed ..and he set out, not knowing where he was going…By faith Moses was hidden by his parents for three months after his birth, because they saw that the child was beautiful, and they were not afraid of the king’s edict.

Perhaps the experience we share of faith the Brewers will surely win, our willingness to hope before we see them hoisting the World Series trophy.

In the 11th Chapter of Hebrews we hear something like a line-up of our ancestors in faith to remind us when we ourselves experience losses and disappointments yet keep on hoping: the evidence comes later.

Yours in Christ Always,

Pr. Craig
